The holidays create a perfect time for families to get creative with their household decorations. During this time, many houses will be filled with guests having fun and creating cherished memories, which can leave many homeowners looking to freshen up their home decor. Holiday decorating trends are always changing so it’s important to keep up to date with your home’s interior design, especially if you are looking to impress visitors. Although interior design can seem very complicated, there are several simple tips you can use to showcase your decorating skills.
Marci Kuver, owner of The Stage, and Kara Gidley, lead designer at The Stage, note that with the holidays approaching, fall colors are coming back in use.
“We are starting to see a lot more pastels, warm colors, rusts, and blushes, as well as western colors,” says Kuver.
Both Kuver and Gidley love Christmas since it’s such a wonderful and cold time you can spend in the house with your close family. To keep the home interesting, Kuver and Gidley recommend mixing heights, colors, and textures.
“Plaid is still very popular and is a great pattern to use in homes,” says Kuver. Adds Gidley, “People are starting to use earthy and fresh themes with wheats, grasses, and plants.” Kuver and Gidley also note that chinoiserie, the use of Chinese-inspired decorative patterns, is coming back into trend as well.
“Focus on key areas in the home like the dining table, shelving, entry, etc.,” says Gidley. “Get creative with tablescapes for family dinners and think of some over-the-napkin ideas.”
“The most important thing about holiday decoration is just to be creative and step out of the box,” says Kuver.
Barbara Holley, owner of Holley’s Window Fashions & Interiors, is also noticing new holiday decorating trends.
“The biggest trend that I’m seeing lately is families moving most of their decorating and entertaining outside with decorated backyards and outdoor kitchen areas,” says Holley.
Holley says her favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because of how family oriented it is, so it’s a great time to spruce up your home.
“The biggest tip that I have for families looking to decorate their homes for the holidays is to make sure that they put a lot of stress on decorating the entryway because it is what people see first,” says Holley. “It can show your style whether it’s country, traditional, etc., but it should definitely make a statement.” Many people tend to decorate their front doors, and Holley recommends utilizing live plants or blooming flowers to give it a nice look.
Whether you only have a couple of guests or a packed house event planned, anyone can take this time to change their home décor into something beautiful and memorable. Some modest changes using colors, flowers, patterns, props, and textures can make an incredible difference you are sure to love. Your decorating changes don’t have to be extravagant or expensive but simply something you and your family can enjoy during this precious time.
