Channel your inner fashionista and harness the power of a designer purse at the 13th annual Power of the Purse that benefits the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center (BVRC). KBTX-TV anchor and reporter Karla Castillo will emcee the event that includes dinner, a cash bar, raffle, and a live and silent auction.
“We are so excited about this year’s event and look forward to welcoming back our loyal participants as well as first-timers,” says Jamie Lynn Johnson, this year’s event chair. According to the BVRC, there will be several keynote speakers, including staff and patients who will relay first-hand accounts regarding the impact that BVRC’s services have had on them and the community. The winner for the 2022 Kid of the Year will also be announced. “The winner will be someone who has really grown by leaps and bounds and has done some incredible work to get from where they were to where they are now,” Johnson says.
As the name suggests, purses are a major part of this event, and most women hope to leave with a new handbag that they have bid on during the course of the evening. This year’s name brands include such popular designers as Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Coach, Dooney & Burke, and Louis Vuitton. The benefit will not only feature purses but additional fashion items, gift certificates, and opportunities for experiences. “We do a play on purses as well, such as diaper bags, picnic baskets, gym bags, etc., to offer other things than just ladies’ bags,” Johnson says.
This 2022 raffle prize is donated by David Gardner Jewelers & Gemologists — a pair of Precious Chatelaine™ stud earrings with diamonds in 18K white gold and a cable classic bracelet with pearls and diamonds — designed by David Yurman. The total value of these two items is $1,670. All funds raised from this event will go back into providing therapy and care to BVRC patients.
According to the BVRC website, the nonprofit is the only freestanding nonprofit provider of comprehensive physical, occupational and speech therapy services in all of Brazos Valley. Its mission is to improve the lives of families in our community who need medical assistance in the areas of physical, speech and occupational therapy services. The agency serves between 350 and 400 families each year throughout the Brazos Valley, including Brazos, Grimes, Madison, Leon, Washington, Burleson, and Robertson counties. BVRC serves all ages and diagnoses, including birth defects, congenital anomalies, developmental delays and sports injuries.
Due to the pandemic, the agency has seen an increase in uninsured and underinsured patients and families desiring their services, says BVRC Chief Executive Officer Alina Fifer.
“Since we opened over six decades ago, we have counted on community support. Our charitable mission is supported by internally generated therapy revenues, fundraising events, grants, corporate gifts, and most importantly, support from private donations,” Fifer says.
“BVRC is here to provide help, hope and answers to all in need.”
